Title: ”The Hot Five”

Artist: Various Artists

Release-Date: November 5, 2012

Has it been five years already? We've been so busy pumping out tracks and organizing parties that we haven't had a whole lot of time for self-congratulatory nonsense. But now, looking back at the past half-decade – with nearly 300 tracks released and dozens of packed label nights in Berlin and around the world – perhaps the time is right to mark our accomplishments. With that in mind, we bring you The Hot Five, a two-disc set lovingly compiled by our label co-founder and flagship DJ/producer Marco Resmann. And, as much as this collection is a celebration of our existence so far, it's not just some exercise in anthologizing and repackaging. One of the guiding principles of Upon. You (and as we feel it should be, house and techno in general) is moving forward, which is why everything found here is piping fresh: the first disc comprises twelve new, exclusive tracks from our talented stable (including Gunnar Stiller, The Cheapers, Matthias Mesteño and Emerson Todd), while the second disc contains ten brand new remixes of selections from our past releases, crafted by some of the outside producers we've admired and befriended (such as Layo & Bushwacka!, Kris Wadsworth and Barem).

Disc One conveys the full spectrum of what tech-house can sound like in 2012, taking clear cues from dance music's rich history but without any blatant retro fetishism. From the mechanistic beatdown of ONNO & Marcus Gehring's “High Five” to Re-UP's deep and dubby “Guess Who' Back”, there's an adventurous sense of pushing things further – not the least of which, dancers' bodies on the floor. Another method we have always valued is the overlapping of different styles and sounds, exemplified here by Magit Cacoon's “A Place to Dream About” (with its manic, jacking rhythmic interplay and cool, sustained piano) and Ruede Hagelstein's “Crazy Lips” (in which a raw, old-school acid bassline gets contrasted with contemporary synth stabs and production flourishes). Of course Resmann himself contributes as well, with the hazy rollick of “Room 06”, which Berliners may have heard him play during this summer's Upon. You label nights at Panorama Bar and Watergate.

Disc Two breathes new life into our extensive back catalog, thanks to an international assemblage of remixers who have been encouraged to take liberties with the source material. Kris Wadsworth (Get Physical) tackles Emerson Todd's “You Got To”, creating a Bizarro World version of piano house that combines a Laurie Anderson-esque vocal stutter with a mutant bassline for disorienting results. André Lodemann (Best Works) offers a smooth yet tingly take on Douglas Greed's pop-leaning “Sense”, while Salvatore Freda (Freerange) adds a soulful vocal sample to Resmann & Meinhardt's “L'Amettla” along with synthetic tweakings and surgically precise percussion. Elsewhere, Layo & Bushwacka! (Olmeto) put some extra pep in the step of Gunnar Stiller, whereas Patrick Chardronnet (Connaisseur) pulls Ruede Hagelstein into the black, murky depths of the ocean.

Heralding in our massive, milestone 2xCD compilation one week prior will be a special 12” sampler, featuring three additional remixes and edits by Steve Bug, Sebo K and dOP with their respective versions of Sierra Sam, Ruede Hagelstein and The Cheapers. We certainly hope this is enough material to satisfy our loyal DJ followers who have supported our releases over the years. And there's good news for our clubber fans too: We're embarking on international fifth anniversary tour in October, continuing through early next year, sharing our passion with you up close and personal.

The cover art of The Hot Five – created by our trusty go-to firm Eat, Sleep + Design – depicts five burned out matches. What you don't see, though, is the techno firestorm that the Upon. You team has ignited. To experience that, you'll just have to listen!

Title: ”Checkpot”

Artist: Marcus Meinhardt

Release-Date: January 23, 2012

Marcus Meinhardts new record is there and with it a hole rig of remixes. "Checkpot" has become a typical Meinhardt that twirls with a cool funkyness and mysterious melodies through the dancers brain. The producer and dj Okain which is known especially through his releases on Tsuba Rec. is taking the theme by the fuze and is relighting the dancefloor with his bass accelerator. Our Upon You approved colleague Pele also likes to play with fire and got together with the artist Findling for his remix. They turn the wind towards the morning and let the flames turn into a trip-dub direction. Similar does the Upon You artist Echonomist who stears the digital bonus track with a heating value of glowing soundscapes as usual.

Title: ”Diary No.2”

Artist: Various Artists

Release-Date: October 17, 2011

Even after the success of Diary №1 – Upon You’s first CD label compilation – it was clear that the Berlin crew wasn’t through with their adventures and had every intention to keep documenting them (and doodling in the margins, too). With nearly 70 releases in their catalog and with recurring label nights held in their hometown’s top clubs Berghain/Panorama Bar and Watergate, Upon You felt it was time to make another full-length statement in the form of Diary №2, compiling 12 new, exclusive tracks, showing the label’s wide sonic spectrum within the realm of techno and house music.

But Diary №2 isn’t just some uninspired victory lap. Whereas the first edition was curated by Marco Resmann (who co-runs Upon You along with Hawks Grunert), this time the honor goes to DJ/producer Marcus Meinhardt, a core member of the Upon You artistry and bookings roster as well as co-founder of the legendary HomeSweetHome party series in Berlin. Another core difference here is that while our first compilation focused solely on our own home-grown talent, this sequel invites some international like-minded friends in on the action – such as Mark Henning, Douglas Greed, The Glitz, Melohman, Javi Bora and RifRaf – in addition to regulars like Gunnar Stiller, Pele and ONNO & Marcus Gehring.

From pristine pulsations to clattering percussion, from warm timbres to frigid synths, Diary №2 covers all the bases, in line with the rich past of techno and house, but clearly without any retro fetishism. Douglas Greed sets the tone with the seductive opener “Sense”, featuring the demure Delhia de France cooing “Everything was buzzing and sizzling and fizzing and twisting”, while RifRaf contributes the fuzzy, buggy “Down from Heaven” which demands the fog machine be cranked up to 11. One of the compilation’s highlights (a relative term, as all 12 tracks are highlights!) is the first collaboration between Marco Resmann and Emerson Todd, the bewitching “Cursed”, which seems to melt sine waves until they evaporate in the air.

In between more spartan and darker moments, The Glitz and Nico Stojan lighten the mood with their respective looney tunes “Orange Blossom” – which would definitely make it into Woody Woodpecker’s DJ bag – and “Inflagranti” – the kind of track that makes you think you have 5.1 ears on your head. And of course our tastemaker Meinhardt wouldn’t neglect to include himself, here bringing a slice of colorful, synthetic tropicalia titled “Splash”. Finally, up-and-coming duo Melohman & Javi Bora close out the collection on a graceful, somber note with the operatic “Moldavia”.

Title: ”Squaring The Circle”

Artist: V.A.

Release-Date: August 22, 2011

Upon You Records has finally reached the big „five-o“ that’s right 50 ! regular releases old, and to celebrate we’re inviting you into our musical swinger club. While our Upon You artists usually work their way up to a musical orgasm on their own, this time they have doubled up for a nice old gangbang of massive proportions. Gunnar Stiller and Marcus Meinhardt are tag teaming on A1 with their little winner „Feinherb“ and are leaving out the foreplay and get straight down to it. Then we have Nico Stojan and The Cheapers who are finger banging the buttons and levers for „Railroad“ on A2. Flipping the side over we find our Dutch-Danish buddys Onno and Mathias Mesteno and let the puppets dance to some sweet house beats with the track „Puppets“..finishing of this vinyl masterpiece are Marco Resmann and Ruede Hagelstein with „Monday“, once again proving how tender they can be if necessary, blowing out the last candles with a touch of Saxophone.

Title: ”Better Not”

Artist: Marcus Meinhardt

Release-Date: November 22, 2010

Passion has always been one of Marcus Meinhardts favourite subjects. He has managed to secure the singer Fabian Reichelt for his latest release on Upon You, Fabian has intertwined the theme of Eros and Thanatos delicately within the beats. Fabian is known for his collaboration with Marek Hemmann, who recently produced his album with him. „Better Not“ is a typical Meinhardt styled club track that has been sweetened by Fabian’s voice giving it a certain Pop-appeal and funkyness that is sure to get the hearts pumping faster on the dancefloors. His producer partner Andreas Henneberg adds his more cantankerous style to this track with his The Glitz Remix on the flipside firing the whole thing up with some strategically placed strings..

Title: ”Diary No 1”

Artist: V.A.

Release-Date: September 13, 2010

In just a few years time, Berlins Upon You has established itself as a leadingfigure in European club culture, not just as a label for its 35+ well received12 EPs, but also for its curated nights at world-renowned spots like Berghain, Watergate and Arena Club. With their combined experience of producing, DJing and promoting, company founders Marco Resmann, Marcus Meinhardt and Hawks Grunert have formed a powerhouse whose momentum shows no signs of slowing down. In spite of (and perhaps because of) its unpigeonholeable stylistic approach, Upon You has become arespected source for all DJs and clubbers in search of forward-thinking sounds, and now with its first full-length compilation, the label offers a succinct overview for both followers and newcomers. Upon You Diary No. 1 has been compiled by Marco Resmann and is split into two parts: the first features 13 new, exclusive tracks from the label’s roster including The Cheapers, Re-UP, ONNO and Mathias Mesteño. The second part, showcasing Resmann’s dynamic DJ ability, is meticulously stitched together using elements of 25 tracks from Upon You’s back catalog, including contributions by Holger Zilske, Catz ‘n Dogz, Mathias Kaden, Luna City Express and many other respected names. Diary serves as both an up-to-date survey of Upon You in 2010 as well as a reflection on its origins, with the knowledge that there are many blank pages to be filled out as we push forward into the future of dance music.

Title: ”All In”

Artist: Marcus Meinhardt

Release-Date: May 17, 2010

If it says “trouble” on it, you know that it’s going to be intense inside. Marcus Meinhardt has the bow strings pulled tight and is aiming for the techno heart of the dance floor with his latest release for Upon You on A1. The arrow subtly touches the souls of the crowd, making Eros faint with jealousy in front of the DJ booth. The B side’s RESTART a track form deep within the techno-boiler goes in the same hypnotic direction, to a place where the night’s haze rises above the heads into the sky and is carried by exalted hands.

The sixth part of our Upon You series takes Marcus down the highway to hell. “Mad Max” will be taking up the fight on the worlds dance floor’s, battling and swashbuckling against the marauders of the record industry. The original B1 engine of his Nightrider has been highly tuned by Super Flu this time around and the swift frame will be catapulted down the A1 with the “Home Sweat Home Mix”. Whilst Marcus, our after hour Glory Rider continues to dominate the groove. With his indicator cranked left, he nearly overtakes himself on the B2. The road to “H-End” will definitely stay exciting! Our opinion: Blockbuster.
